The Boston Red Sox began to overhaul their roster on Tuesday night, acquiring infielder Tony Graffanino from the Kansas City Royals and outfielder Adam Hyzdu from the San Diego Padres.

Boston also designated left-handed reliever Alan Embree for assignment.

The Red Sox, who have lost six of their last eight games, sent Class-A left-hander Juan Cedeno and triple-A outfielder Chip Ambres to Kansas City.

Boston sent right-hander Scott Cassidy to San Diego for Hyzdu, who joins the Red Sox organization for the fourth time.

Graffanino, who played all four infield positions for the Royals, was batting .298 with three homers and 18 runs batted in playing part-time for the Royals.

The Red Sox have needed a second baseman since Mark Bellhorn sprained his thumb over the weekend, leaving them with only Alex Cora there. Boston has needed an outfielder since Jay Payton was traded to Oakland recently.

Detroit Tiger reliever Troy Percival probably will sit out the rest of the season because of a partial muscle tear in his right forearm.

Percival, signed by the Tigers during the off-season to be their closer, went on the disabled list for the second time this season on July 15, a move retroactive to July 10. He was examined Monday by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who conducted an MRI exam and said Percival must rest for two months. It is not known if he will need surgery.

Percival was 1-2 with a 5.76 ERA and eight saves in 11 opportunities over 25 innings.

Oakland Athletic designated hitter Erubiel Durazo will undergo season-ending surgery on his left elbow, and is expected to be sidelined an additional nine to 12 months.

Durazo, 30, has been out of the lineup since May 25 after being diagnosed with tendinitis. He went on the disabled list for the seventh time in his career.

New York Yankee outfielder Ruben Sierra was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left hamstring.

Sierra was hurt while running to first base on his two-run single in the eighth inning Monday night that gave the Yankees an 11-10 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Infielder Andy Phillips was recalled from triple-A Columbus.

The Florida Marlins put right-hander Nate Bump on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Travis Smith from triple-A Albuquerque to take his place in the bullpen.

Bump, who was 0-3 with a 4.03 ERA in 31 games, has inflammation in his throwing shoulder. The move was retroactive to Sunday.
