Going with the flow in Iceland

Share

Iceland had been on geologist Stephanie Sibbett-Brutocao’s list of dream destinations for some time. In September, she and her husband, Brad Brutocao, made the trip. “Iceland is the mecca for geologists -- beautiful glaciers, volcanoes, hot water springs, snowcapped mountains and black sand beaches,” she said. “We were there five days, and I think we put 900 miles on our rental Jeep.” The building in the photo, taken with a Canon AE-1 SLR, is the posh but remote Hotel Budir on the Snaefell Peninsula, about 100 miles from the capital of Reykjavik. The hotel sits on an ancient lava flow that stretches down toward the Atlantic. The tidal flats outside the hotel attract birds.
