A 27-year-old Los Angeles man was in fair condition Sunday after being shot by someone in a passing vehicle while driving west on the 91 Freeway in Carson, authorities said.

The attack, which occurred about 8 p.m. Saturday, is the latest of about two dozen freeway shootings in Southern California this year.

Officer Armando Clemente of the California Highway Patrol said investigators had not yet determined the motive for the shooting or whether it was related to attacks earlier this year.

He said the victim was driving on the 91 Freeway transition road to the northbound Harbor Freeway in a 2000 Lexus sedan when a white van or pickup truck pulled alongside him.

A passenger in the other vehicle exchanged eye contact with the driver of the Lexus and then fired several shots at the car, wounding the man in the left leg and arm, Clemente said.

The victim lost control of the Lexus, which went down an embankment and hit a tree, the officer said. He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance.

Clemente described the suspect as a man in his early 20s with short black hair. Anyone with information is asked to call (800) TELLCHP.

The freeway shootings this year have occurred in four counties and have left four people dead. The violence has prompted the CHP to increase the number of its freeway patrols.
