Priest in Riverside Is Named Auxiliary Bishop
Pope Benedict XVI has appointed a Riverside priest as an auxiliary bishop in the far-flung Diocese of San Bernardino.
Father Rutilio J. Del Riego, 64, pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Riverside, will be ordained as a bishop on Sept. 20 at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Chino Hills, the diocese said Tuesday. The diocese’s previous auxiliary bishop, the Most Rev. Dennis Patrick O’Neil, died in 2003.
A native of Spain, del Riego was ordained a priest in 1965, a year after he came to the United States. He became a U.S. citizen in 1981.
As a priest, he previously served as director of the Spanish Catholic Center in Washington and in various positions in El Paso and San Antonio and in the San Bernardino diocese.
The Most Rev. Gerald R. Barnes is bishop of the diocese, which reports serving 1.2 million Catholics.
