Some See Energy Deal as Move Against Kyoto Pact
A nonbinding agreement among the United States and five other nations to develop clean energy technologies met with criticism that it could be a ploy to undo the Kyoto pact, the binding environmental accord that Washington refuses to sign.
The initiative brings together the U.S., Australia, China, India, South Korea and Japan with the aim of developing and selling technologies ranging from “clean coal” to next-generation nuclear fission.
Officials from the six countries said they saw it as a complement to Kyoto. Details of the plan, announced at an Asia-Pacific forum in Laos, were sketchy.
