A Former Red Sox Doc With a Fan Base All His Own

As a devout, disinterested sports imbecile, I was enthralled with J.R. Moehringer’s article about the Boston Red Sox and their former physician, Dr. Bill Morgan (“The Red Sox’s Bloodiest Day,” July 10). But then again, the article was really about the human spirit. I think those corporate white shirts did Dr. Morgan a favor by firing him. He was meant for a higher calling. As a medical care provider, I’m only too happy to hear of a doctor in the public sector who is so devoted to his patients.

Moehringer’s piece was extra innings long on melodrama and should have been called due to rain/tears. Talk about base-bawl! Dr. Morgan, bless you buddy, you’ve done real, real good. Take a pinch of chew in your cheek or a handful of polly seeds, and when that wild pitch hits you, never rub where it hurts. Doc, you should know this: “There’s no crying in baseball.”

Moehringer’s article was really fine. He took a sympathetic figure as his subject and proceeded to write a great piece. It’s a story that begs for a follow-up when more is known.
