More than 40 people were killed or wounded today when a bomb exploded inside a mosque here during the funeral of a cleric who had spoken against the Taliban militia, police said.

Early reports of the attack were sketchy, and the number of victims who died was unclear.

Some witnesses reported seeing many bodies or body parts at the scene and said at least 14 people died, but authorities had not confirmed a number.

Various reports said Akram Khakreezwal, the police commander in Kabul, the capital, was among the wounded or dead.
