UCLA Wins Again

Freshman Anjelica Selden pitched a six-hitter and struck out 10, leading UCLA to a 3-1 victory over Tennessee on Friday at the NCAA Women’s College World Series at Oklahoma City.

Emily Zaplatosch had a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead and end Volunteer pitcher Monica Abbott’s streak of scoreless innings at 43. She had pitched six consecutive shutouts.

Jodie Legaspi had an RBI single in the fifth inning, and UCLA (38-18) scored again in the sixth on a throwing error by Abbott (48-8), whose wild throw to first allowed pinch-runner Danesha Adams to score.

Selden (27-12), who earned her second victory in the series, gave up a home run to Tonya Callahan with one out in the fourth inning. It was Callahan’s 10th homer of the season.

Tennessee (65-14) will face the winner of today’s DePaul-Alabama game.

UCLA advances to the semifinals against either Arizona, California or Texas.

The Bruins will not know their opponent until the third game of today’s four-game schedule is completed.

UCLA needs one more win to advance to the championship game for the third consecutive season.
