From Times wire reports

Hundred of thousands of people, including relatives of those killed or wounded by Basque separatists’ bomb attacks, packed the streets of Madrid to protest a government offer to hold talks with the armed group ETA if it renounces violence.

The crowd shouted slogans against Premier Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and demanded the resignation of Spain’s ombudsman for terrorism victims.

Zapatero says the time is right to seek talks because ETA has been weakened by a wave of arrests in the last two years and has not killed anyone since 2003.
