Bryan Twins Lose Final to Mirnyi, Bjorkman

Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo, attempting to win their second French Open men’s doubles title, fell short in the final on Saturday against second-seeded Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden and Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

Bjorkman and Mirnyi rallied and also waited out a rain delay to beat the third-seeded Bryans, winning, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, in 1 hour 32 minutes. The Bryans are 1-4 in Grand Slam finals, having won here in 2003.

They lost the Australian Open final in January after beating Bjorkman and Mirnyi in the semifinals; the twins had been 2-0 against them before Saturday’s final.

The final momentum shift came in the seventh game of the third set when the Bryans were broken. Mirnyi, at 5-4, held at love to clinch the match.

“We might have wasted all our [service] breaks,” Bob Bryan said of the first set. “They’re a tough team. When we’ve played them it’s been momentum shifts. This could have been straight sets.”

Said Mike Bryan: “We’ve had some bad luck in finals. I guess we have to keep putting ourselves in this position.”
