Tropical Storm Arlene Launches 2005 Season

The first tropical storm of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season formed in the Caribbean and headed toward the Gulf of Mexico, bringing heavy rain to Central America, the Cayman Islands and parts of Cuba.

Tropical Storm Arlene carried winds of 40 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Some oil and gas companies began evacuating nonessential workers from rigs in the gulf.

Five to 10 inches of rain was possible for the Cayman Islands and Cuba.
