MetroStar goalkeeper Zach Wells just missed a Major League Soccer record with 14 saves and got his fourth career shutout in a 0-0 tie with D.C. United on Sunday at East Rutherford, N.J.

The league record is 15, set by Tony Meola with the MetroStars in a 2-1 loss to D.C. United in 1997.

“I don’t know if all of them were quality saves, but I’ll take them,” Wells said.

Wells, starting this season in place of the injured Jonny Walker, had two key saves late in the game for the MetroStars (4-3-5). He dived to stop Alecko Eskandarian’s shot from point-blank range in the 71st minute, and made a diving catch of a header by Christian Gomez in the 61st.

Nick Rimando was rarely tested in his fourth shutout of the season for United (3-4-4), who outshot the MetroStars, 28-8, but could not get the ball past Wells.

Chicago 2, FC Dallas 0 -- Nate Jaqua and Lubos Reiter each scored at Chicago to lift the Fire (7-5-1), which has won four of its last five matches.

FC Dallas’ (7-2-3) four-game winning streak ended, and it lost for the first time in seven games.
