From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Two Los Angeles residents have been arrested by Mexican authorities after a search of their minivan at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry turned up $1.2 million.

Alvaro Gonzalez Quintero and Alejandra Martinez Olmedo had just entered Mexico on Wednesday when Mexican federal agents, during a routine search, found the money.

The source of the funds is unknown, but Mexican authorities suspect that the pair could have been trying to launder drug money. They are charged with violating Mexican customs laws.
