They Will Draw Support

Since the start of 2004, Borrego and Continental Red have combined for one win in 25 starts.

Even so, both horses are expected to receive a lot of attention from bettors today at Hollywood Park. Borrego will be one of the favorites in the $250,000 Californian and Continental Red should have plenty of support in the $75,000 Quicken Tree. The card also includes the $100,000 Affirmed Handicap for 3-year-olds preparing for the $400,000 Swaps Stakes on July 9.

During a career in which he has won three of 15, Borrego has been second or third on seven occasions, including runner-up finishes in the Louisiana, Arkansas and Super derbies as a 3-year-old. Third, beaten by a neck in the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap on May 14 in his Hollywood Park debut, Borrego, a son of El Prado who has earned $687,090, will be ridden by Garrett Gomez.

Continental Red, a 9-year-old Flying Continental gelding, is winless in 14 races since the start of 2004, but he won the Quicken Tree, a 1 1/2 -mile grass race, two years ago.

Race of the day: Saint Liam, a multiple graded stakes winner, will make his first start for trainer Bobby Frankel in the $750,000 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs. The 5-year-old Saint Ballado horse will take on stablemate Badge Of Silver, defending champion Colonial Colony, 2003 winner Perfect Drift and four others in the Grade I at 1 1/8 miles. The Foster is part of a national pick four that includes the Californian, the $300,000 Fleur De Lis at Churchill and the $300,000 Ogden Phipps Handicap at Belmont Park.

One for the road: Raise A Class can get the waiting ride he prefers in his second start of 2005 and can spring a mild surprise in the eighth at Belmont. Jean-Luc Samyn will ride the 4-year-old Kris S. colt in the $46,000 allowance at 1 1/8 miles on the grass.

Exotically speaking: A late pick four using Me My Mine, Early Snow and Hotel Hall in the seventh, Marla Bay, Navaja and Alozaina in the eighth, Surf Cat in the ninth and Elisa’s Energy, Tuff Muffin and Love Always in the 10th.

Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 1/98 Money: Previous day/meet total: $4.40/$486.70. Total money bet: $706.
