From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The City Council has approved a $2-billion, two-year budget that calls for closing the city jail but spares library employees and park rangers.

The budget, effective July 1, would transfer inmates to county jails and eliminate almost 90 positions, a move that would save $5.1 million over two years.

Council members agreed to consider keeping the jail open if Alameda County was willing to help pay for it.
