Wood Should Be Back in Cub Rotation Wednesday

Chicago Cub pitcher Kerry Wood, who is on the disabled list because of a strained right shoulder, probably will start Wednesday’s game against Milwaukee, Manager Dusty Baker said.

With the return of Wood and Mark Prior, who is scheduled to start today against the White Sox, the Cubs’ rotation will be at full strength.

“I look at it as we acquired two quality guys, similar to a trade,” Baker said. “We’ve done what we could with who we could. We’ve sort of treaded water.”

Wood (1-1, 6.15 earned-run average) has been on the disabled list since May 3. Prior (4-1, 2.93 ERA) went on the DL with a fracture in his right elbow May 28.

“If they get back to how we know them in a short period of time, that solves a lot of problems,” Baker said.

Baltimore pitcher Bruce Chen left Saturday’s game against Atlanta because of a sprained big toe on his left foot. X-rays were negative and Chen hopes to be able to make his next scheduled start.... The Braves recalled pitcher Roman Colon from double-A Mississippi to start the 5-4 victory over the Orioles. The right-hander gave up four hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one.... The Cincinnati Reds put infielder-outfielder Ryan Freel on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of outfielder Jason Romano from triple-A Louisville. Freel hasn’t played since June 18 because of inflammation on his left foot.

The Houston Astros retired the uniform number of three-time All-Star Jimmy Wynn, honoring the slugging exploits of the “Toy Cannon.”

A pregame ceremony was held before the game against the Texas Rangers, with Wynn driven around Minute Maid Park in a black sedan to a standing ovation.

Wynn, now 63, played with the Astros from 1963 to ’73. He was traded to the Dodgers in 1973, where he spent two All-Star seasons.

Wynn’s No. 24 jersey number will be the eighth retired by the Astros.
