Coldplay still playing catch-up with 50 Cent
Coldplay’s “X&Y;” tops the nation’s pop album charts for the third consecutive week after selling 186,000 more copies last week. That pushes the album’s total sales to more than 1.2 million, probably enough to make the Top 10 on the midyear sales chart, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Midyear figures won’t be released until next week, but 50 Cent’s “The Massacre” is certain to be No. 1 on that tally. The New York rapper’s CD, released in early March, has sold almost 4 million copies, about twice that of the runner-ups in the year’s sales race.

Album sales -- An article on album sales in Thursday’s Calendar Weekend said Coldplay’s “X&Y;” sold 186,000 copies in the United States last week and Mariah Carey’s “The Emancipation of Mimi” sold 132,000. Actually, “X&Y;” sold 181,000 and “Emancipation” sold 131,000.
Both the Game’s “The Documentary” and Mariah Carey’s “The Emancipation of Mimi” are nearing sales of 2.1 million, though Carey’s is expected to end up No. 2 on the midyear figures because it is selling faster now than the Game’s.
The Carey album, released in mid-April, ranks No. 2 in this week’s chart after selling an additional 132,000 copies last week. The Game’s CD, out since January, is No. 57 this week, with sales of 17,000 more copies.
Four acts entered the Top 10 on Wednesday with new releases: Boyz N Da Hood, Keyshia Cole, the Offspring and Birdman.
