Sinkhole Affects Major Road in Pasadena Area
A 50-foot-long sinkhole that collapsed the westbound lanes of Huntington Drive in the Pasadena area Wednesday has forced the closure of a section of that major commuter route at least until the weekend.
Officials also closed Laurel Canyon Boulevard on Wednesday night to southbound traffic between Mulholland Drive and Mount Olympus Drive. That decision was made “out of an abundance of caution,” said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles City Fire Department. “No visible changes have been seen,” he said, but steady rain worried officials. Southbound traffic will be closed until further notice.
In Pasadena, officials said that although the sinkhole was 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep, no injuries or major damage to vehicles was reported.
Authorities closed the westbound lanes of Huntington Drive between Rosemead and San Gabriel boulevards and said the lanes would not reopen until Saturday or later. Eastbound lanes will remain open.
