A suspect and a sheriff’s deputy were shot and wounded Thursday evening near Van Nuys Airport when two Los Angeles police officers trying to help the deputy opened fire, the LAPD said.

The deputy was shot in the shoulder and the suspect in the arm and leg, police said. They added that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

An investigation of the shooting, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m., temporarily halted Amtrak and Metrolink rail service in the San Fernando Valley and bottled up street traffic near the north end of the airport.

Jason Lee, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department, said the two officers first tried to subdue the suspect with a Taser gun.

When that didn’t work, Lee said, the officers opened fire with their pistols as the suspect charged at them with sharpened weapons.

Two bullets struck the suspect, and a stray bullet grazed the deputy’s shoulder.

The identities of the suspect and the deputy were not released.

Details about the confrontation between the deputy and the suspect were not immediately available, but Lee said that the deputy called for help and that LAPD officers responded.

Metrolink spokeswoman Denise Tyrrell said the shooting occurred after a short foot chase near the tracks.

Passengers on Metrolink train No. 119 were taken from the scene, and four Amtrak trains were delayed in both directions as authorities investigated, Tyrrell said. She said the delays could extend into this morning.

“We may have to bus the morning passengers to where the train is,” Tyrrell said.
