Redistricting Politics

Re “Democrats Offer Deal on Remap,” March 1: The excuses against redistricting California’s convoluted gerrymandered voting areas scream pure politics. It is insulting to be told that the compelling reason the districts should not be redone until after the 2010 census is that they won’t be sufficiently “even” to meet constitutional muster.
Midway into the decade, the existing districts have similar errors already because of demographic changes, which are never even across districts. The Inland Empire has far more growth in the last five years than, say, north Orange County. This is a smoke screen, and one I won’t tolerate as a voter. I’m not impressed with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, but in this case he is on the mark.
