N. Ireland Family Rejects IRA-Style Justice
The Irish Republican Army said Tuesday that it had offered to shoot those involved in the fatal stabbing of a Catholic man.
The IRA, which has expelled three members over the killing, said in a statement that it had met the sisters and fiancee of Robert McCartney and offered its own form of justice but that the family wanted the killers dealt with by the courts.
The group did not specify whether it intended to kill or wound those responsible.
McCartney, 33, was beaten and stabbed in a bar in late January. His family has accused the IRA of cleaning up evidence and intimidating witnesses.
Their statements are remarkable because they come from a Catholic neighborhood where many people distrust the mainly Protestant police.
