The Legislature will conduct hearings “very shortly” into what the Senate leader said Wednesday was Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “egregious” refusal to follow legislators’ intent to put more nurses in state hospitals.

Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata (D-Oakland) said the governor had repeatedly “violated” the Legislature’s intent that hospitals provide one nurse for each five patients in their medical and surgical units.

A Sacramento judge ruled Friday that Schwarzenegger had illegally suspended the law requiring more nurses.
