Tough bikes for all-day adventure

Share

The sport of mountain biking has several factions: chairlift daredevils who fly off cliffs on the way down, short-distance bike racers and the fastest-growing group, all-day adventurers. The all-day crowd revels in long, exploratory rides and organized endurance challenges. They want lightweight bikes that are good for climbing and offering great shock absorption for downhill comfort. Models in this so-called “all mountain” category generally come with 27-speed drivetrains, powerful disc brakes and frame technology that minimizes up-and-down bobbing during steep, uphill pedaling.

A shock absorber

Maverick American ML 7.3: Beautiful, innovative cycling from suspension guru Paul Turner, inventor of the Rock Shox.

Likes: Great suspension softens rock-studded trails. Special Maverick-made “inverted” forks can be “locked-out” (stiffened) for better climbing on long grades. Attractive, durable, scratch-free anodized finish. Turner’s unique “MonoLink” frame design isolates and stabilizes the pedals over the rough stuff.

Cannondale Prophet: Simple, efficient and hassle-free.

Dislikes: None.

Price: $1,600 to $5,000, depending on components. www.cannondale.com; (203) 749-7000.

Won’t break the bank

It’s got a grip

Specialized FSR XC: Good all-round deal.

Likes: At about 28 pounds, lightweight for a bike in this price range. Four inches of suspension compression is less than the others, but still a great ride; it’s faster on short distances and races.

Dislikes: Slightly less comfortable for longer rides.

Price: $1,100 to $1,400, depending on components. www.specialized.com; (800) 245-3462.
