Man Gets Life Without Parole in Officer Killing

A mentally ill ex-convict was sentenced Monday to life in prison without parole for killing a San Diego police motorcycle officer in 2003 by running him over with a stolen truck.
Kevin Gerald Williams, 39, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Officer Terry Bennett, 38, in a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty.
After being found mentally incompetent to stand trial, Williams, a diagnosed schizophrenic, spent a year in a state mental hospital before returning to Superior Court for trial.
Bennett was following Williams when Williams made an abrupt U-turn and rammed Bennett’s motorcycle.
Bennett’s widow and parents attended the sentencing.
