New School Rankings Released
State education leaders Tuesday released new rankings for California’s public schools that offer a glimpse into how campuses performed on standardized tests in English, math and other subjects.
More than 8,300 schools were ranked on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being highest. Schools also were ranked on a separate 1-to-10 scale that compared them against campuses with similar demographics.
The rankings were based on tests taken last spring by California public school students in grades two to 11.
The ranking system is part of the state’s Academic Performance Index, which uses various test scores, including results from the state’s high school exit exam, to gauge academic achievement.
In addition, the state Tuesday released API base scores that will be used to gauge the progress of schools this year.
Campuses are required to reach annual targets as they strive toward the state’s goal of 800 on a scale of 200 to 1,000.
The base scores are calculated from the 2004 API.
