BEIJING -- Rescuers today found the bodies of 18 coal miners killed in an underground blast at a mine in southwestern China and were searching for one missing worker, the government said.
The blast happened Thursday afternoon in the Sulongsi coal mine in the town of Xinzhen, near the industrial city of Chongqing, the official New China News Agency said, citing local officials.
The cause was under investigation, the news agency said.
Thousands of Chinese coal miners are killed each year in explosions, fires and floods. Investigators often blame indifference to safety rules or lack of equipment such as gas-clearing ventilators.
