Two Paws Up

You loved the scenery in Robert Redford’s movie “A River Runs Through It.” You’ve always wanted to see the unspoiled beauty of the Montana wilderness for yourself. But just the thought of spending your vacation roughing it--sleeping bags, bug spray, no hot shower--makes you want to check into the Four Seasons to recuperate. The Resort at Paws Up, set to open this June in western Montana, is what you’ve been waiting for. It sits on seven miles of the Blackfoot River (made famous by a fly-fishing Brad Pitt in the movie) amid 37,000 acres of photogenic wilderness. Instead of pup tents and sleeping bags, there are private timber homes combining rustic ambience with luxury linens, hot tubs and flat-screen televisions. Outdoor enthusiasts can stay in tents if they want, but the tents are equipped with beds, wall art and electricity. And two restaurants are within shouting distance.

The resort, which bills itself as “the last best place,” makes it easy for guests to experience the area’s natural wonders. There are 100 miles of trails throughout the property for hiking, riding horses and ATVs and biking. The river is ideal for fishing, whitewater rafting and kayaking. The property also includes an equestrian center and a course for clay-target sports. And for those who find the place too constricting, the Paws Up Outfitters will arrange a camp out in the neighboring 1.5 million-acre Bob Marshall Wilderness--complete with feather beds, of course.

The Resort at Paws Up, 40060 Paws Up Road, Greenough, MT, 59823; (800) 473-0601, fax (406) 244-5201, www.pawsup.com. Opening rates start at $248 per night for a house that sleeps four. Each accommodation comes with a golf cart for getting around the property.
