Utah’s off-road routes get fenced in

Share

The annual Easter Jeep Safari that attracts thousands of off-roaders to the back country of Moab, Utah, has a new feature -- fences.

Workers installed 1,100 feet of wooden fencing this month to protect the desert environment around the Escalator and Hell’s Gate, two popular vehicle-crunching routes, and other sites.

“Awhile back it looked like we were going to lose those [two],” said Ber Knight of Red Rock 4-Wheelers, the event host. “Now it looks as though we can keep them if we’re good boys.”

Jon Sering, a Bureau of Land Management ranger, says participants can expect continued access to the sites if they stay within the boundaries.
