8 Die as Plane Crashes on Takeoff From Island
A twin-engine commercial plane crashed while taking off from the tiny Colombian island of Old Providence, killing eight people, including a 3-year-old boy, and injuring six passengers, authorities said.
The West Caribbean Airways turboprop, a Czech-built LET-410, was carrying mostly tourists from Old Providence to another nearby island, San Andres, said Martin Gonzalez, spokesman for the nation’s civil aviation agency. He said a technical problem may have caused the crash.
The dead included the pilot, copilot, five women and the boy, a police spokeswoman said. She said all of those killed appeared to be Colombians.
