O’Neill May Have Quiet Day

If trainer Doug O’Neill is going to add to his record total of 48 wins at Santa Anita’s winter-spring meet today, it will be an upset.

O’Neill has only one entrant today, Western Blondy, a longshot in the fifth.

A 3-year-old daughter of Gilded Time, Western Blondy will be making her first start since Aug. 18 at Bay Meadows. She won once in four starts in 2004.

The filly to beat in the $48,000 allowance for state-breds at 6 1/2 furlongs is Jane Blossom. Owned by Jeff Stiefel and trained by Jeff Mullins, who is second to O’Neill in the Santa Anita standings, the 4-year-old daughter of Unusual Heat is two for two on the main track. Patrick Valenzuela will be aboard.

O’Neill surpassed the old mark of 47 -- set by Gary Jones 30-some years ago and later equaled by Bob Baffert -- when heavily favored Keystone Malibu won Sunday’s first race.

Race of the day: Tax The Queen, a 4 3/4 -length winner in her last outing March 13, will try for her fifth win in 12 starts in today’s eighth at Aqueduct. Norberto Arroyo Jr. will ride the 4-year-old Artax filly for trainer Jennifer Pedersen in the $46,000 allowance at one mile. The race is part of a pick six with a carry-over of $51,401.

One for the road: Lobster Ontuesdays debuts for trainer Paul Aguirre after a claim on Feb. 3 and should improve for her new barn and with a switch to turf in today’s seventh at Bay Meadows. Iggy Puglisi will ride the 3-year-old Unusual Heat filly for Shimamura Racing Stables in the $32,000 maiden claimer at 7 1/2 furlongs. Many horses sired by Unusual Heat move up dramatically when tried on the grass.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Jane Blossom, Feel The Heat and Buffy My Love in the fifth, Shoshone and Out Of Coal in the sixth, Give Me Sugar and Siphon Honey in the seventh, and Speed Rules, Margaritalosflores and Appearance Fee in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 4/173. Money: Previous day/meet total: $21.40/$929.20. Total money bet: $1,168.
