Death of an Elephant

Re “Last of 3 Elephants Sent From San Diego to Chicago Dies,” May 3: In response to the death of the elephant Wankie, no animal rights activist I know is saying, “We told you so.” We just continue our work: We explain why elephants do not belong in zoos (or circuses); we point out that they are not to be captured and confined for our entertainment; and we show that they suffer and die needlessly when they cannot roam great distances and bond with members of their large families. We work to save their natural habitats. And we grieve as we speak out for animals that cannot protest their unnatural confinement on their own behalf.
