Looking for a Change of Fortune in Hawthorne

Share

House Of Fortune hasn’t had much, if any, luck since winning the Hollywood Park Breeders’ Cup Oaks last June 12 in Inglewood.

The 4-year-old daughter of Free House is winless in four subsequent races and has beaten only three horses in three of those defeats.

Owned by Arnold Zetcher LLC and trained by Ron McAnally, House Of Fortune hopes a return to Hollywood Park will get her turned around as she faces six other fillies and mares in today’s $100,000 Hawthorne Handicap.

A win in the Hawthorne, a Grade III at 1 1/16 miles, would be nothing new for McAnally. The Hall of Fame trainer has a record six victories in the race. His most recent came with Printemps in 2001. David Flores will ride House Of Fortune for the first time today and they will break from the outside post.

Hollywood Story is the one to beat. The 4-year-old daughter of Wild Rush has picked up two of her three victories at Hollywood Park. She won the Hollywood Starlet in 2003 and the Bayakoa Handicap last Dec. 12.

From the inside out, the Hawthorne field is completed by Cissy, Muir Beach, Quero Quero, Siphon Honey and Fencelineneighbor.

Race of the day: Six unbeaten 2-year-olds will get together in the $100,000 Three Chimneys Juvenile, which goes as the sixth race on the card at Churchill Downs. Half Ours is the likely favorite in the five-furlong race, which is the second leg of a pick six with a guaranteed pool of $500,000. The gray son of Unbridled’s Song won by 10 3/4 lengths in his debut at Keeneland on April 17 for owners Aaron and Marie Jones and trainer Todd Pletcher. The only juvenile with a loss in the race is Spotsgone, who was fourth in his bow on April 21 at Keeneland.

One for the road: Perfect Drift ended a long losing streak when returning to the grass for trainer Murray Johnson and might be able to spring a surprise in today’s $400,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs. Gary Stevens, who was aboard for the three-length victory on April 21 at Keeneland, will again ride in the Grade I at 1 1/8 miles. The race is the ninth on the program.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Commanding Creek, Golden Bonus and Motivus in the third, Scriptress, Nauvoo and Runawayskye in the fourth and Jack’s Kid in the fifth.
