The Story We Must Hear

Re “Soul Mate in Years of Horror,” Column One, May 4: Rarely does one read a story that does not let go of you, but today was one of those days. Eugene Zinn’s vivid memories of his time in the Nazi death camps, the loss of his family, the life he’s led and the chance finding of an old buddy from Auschwitz remind all of us to listen attentively to the stories of survivors while we are still fortunate to have them among us.

Zinn’s story reminds us that this is a chapter of history for which words seem inadequate, but given that all we have are words, to listen while they are being spoken, to hear the voices of those who survived, and to never forget.
