Southland sites get EPA cleanup funds

The Environmental Protection Agency awarded a total of $1.2 million Tuesday to Los Angeles and three other Southland cities as part a $75.9-million nationwide program to clean up and redevelop contaminated properties.
The city of Los Angeles will receive $400,000 to clean up a former gas station site in the 300 block of North Gaffey Street and a former oil field area in the 1500 block of Rockwood Street, which includes abandoned oil extraction wells with a history of methane and hydrogen sulfide releases.
The city of Gardena will receive $400,000 to identify potential sites to be cleaned up, as well as for community outreach.
Lynwood’s redevelopment agency will use its $200,000 grant for community outreach and for installing groundwater monitoring wells at the 10-acre K & K Furniture site, which is contaminated with trichloroethylene.
The El Cajon Redevelopment Agency will receive $200,000 to be used for environmental site assessments.
