Men Accused in Coup Attempt Freed, Deported

From Times Wire Reports

Zimbabwe freed 62 men who had been accused of plotting a coup in Equatorial Guinea.

Lawyer Jonathan Samkange said the 62 finished yearlong sentences on immigration charges. All but one -- a Zimbabwean -- were deported to South Africa, where they could face charges of violating that country’s anti-mercenary laws.

In a trial last year, the men denied being part of a coup plot and said they were headed to Congo to work at a diamond mine.

They were convicted of immigration charges after prosecutors failed to prove weapons and coup conspiracy charges.
