A revival of W.S. Gilbert’s “Engaged” and “Woman Before a Glass” each took home five Obie Awards on Monday -- the most for any single show -- at the annual ceremony for off-Broadway honors, sponsored by the Village Voice in New York.
The director of “Engaged,” Doug Hughes, was also honored for sustained excellence, and another play he staged, “Doubt,” won nods for playwright John Patrick Shanley and star Cherry Jones. Because “Doubt” later moved to Broadway, it’s also eligible for Tony Awards and is considered the favorite in the Tony play category. Those awards will be announced June 5.
