Crush-Proof Roof Would Add Cost, Weight

Share

In his letter of May 15 (“Looking to Auto History for a Crush-Proof Roof”), Bart L. Trinchero wonders why carmakers, “with all our modern technology,” can’t build a crush-proof car roof.

They certainly can be built. However, such a roof would add the two things to a vehicle every manufacturer most fears: cost and weight. In their ongoing efforts to cut costs and “add lightness,” even given today’s incredible technologies, carmakers sometimes still make a choice for lower weight and lower cost, in spite of potential safety benefits.
