Trial Begins for 37 Alleged Militants

A trial began in Kuwait for 37 Islamists charged with having links to Al Qaeda, and prosecutors demanded the death penalty for more than half of them.
Hooded special forces commandos manned the courtroom, and security was heavy.
The defendants, shackled at their ankles, complained they were unable to meet their lawyers before the session. Seven of the 15 defense attorneys walked out in protest. Reporters said several defendants denied the charges, saying confessions were extracted under duress.
