These Two Are Singled Out

Those looking for singles in today’s pick six at Hollywood Park, which has a carry-over of $150,067, will probably focus on the fourth and fifth races.

Membership Coffee, a 4-year-old General Meeting filly, has finished second in three of her five starts, but she will get a lot of attention in the fourth, a $45,000 maiden affair for California-bred fillies and mares.

A race later, Indian Ocean will be favored against nine other 3-year-olds in the $51,000 optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles.

Owned by Ernie Moody’s Mercedes Stable LLC and trained by Jay Robbins, Indian Ocean, a son of Stormy Atlantic, was third in his debut on April 9 at Santa Anita, then was an impressive winner in his Hollywood Park debut April 30.

Matched against a well regarded first-time starter, Follow The Rainbow, trained by Bob Baffert, Indian Ocean won by four lengths in a rapid 1:14 4/5 for the 6 1/2 furlongs.

Membership Coffee, owned and bred by Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm, was a distant second to Soldier’s Kiss in her last start on April 24. Soldier’s Kiss came right back to win last Saturday as one of three consecutive winners saddled by trainer Bruce Headley.

Race of the day: Patriot’s Song will try for his second consecutive win for trainer Gregory Foley in today’s ninth at Churchill Downs. Calvin Borel will ride the 6-year-old Sultry Song gelding, who won by nearly seven lengths on April 27 at Keeneland, in the $57,000 optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles.

One for the road: Alert hasn’t been out since Nov. 7, 2003, but has trained well for his return and catches a field without a lot of early speed in today’s second at Churchill Downs. Pat Day will ride the 6-year-old Unbridled horse for a partnership and new trainer Steve Margolis in the $62,500 claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs. Before he was sidelined, Alert had won four in a row at Calder.

Exotically speaking: A late pick four using Indian Ocean and Gold Bridle in the fifth, Marsupial, Swedish Cowboy and Celtic Mojo in the sixth, Thunder’s Echo in the seventh and Akamai, Native Turk and Triumphal Entry in the eighth.
