The incumbent president of Zanzibar, a semiautonomous region of Tanzania, was declared the winner of an election marred by violence, with officials saying nine people were killed in the latest clashes.
Seif Sharif Hamad of the main opposition Civic United Front said five supporters died on the Zanzibar archipelago’s second island, Pemba. A member of the government security force said four of his colleagues were killed on Pemba.
Incumbent President Amani Abeid Karume of Chama Cha Mapinduzi won 53.2% of the vote, while Hamad had 46.1%, election officials said. Hamad, who had earlier claimed victory, rejected the results.
