Two for Turf at Santa Anita

Cambiocorsa and The Toast Of Troy are the only horses in today’s seventh at Santa Anita with a win on the local turf course.

The other 11 fillies and mares are a combined 0 for 19 on the layout entering the $42,000 optional claimer for California-breds at about 6 1/2 furlongs. The race is the fifth leg of a pick six with a carry-over of more than $87,000.

Owned by Leatherman Racing and trained by Doug O’Neill, Cambiocorsa, a 3-year-old Avenue Of Flags filly, broke her maiden by three lengths at today’s distance on April 15. This will be her first start since she finished third behind Tempting Date and Etch on the Del Mar grass on Sept. 7. Jon Court, who won the Sport Page Handicap for trainer Roger Stein on Saturday at Belmont Park, will ride.

The Toast Of Troy, a 5-year-old Unusual Heat mare, has hit the board in four of six on the Santa Anita turf but is winless at today’s distance. Second down the hill on Oct. 26, she will be ridden by Javier Santiago.

Race of the day: Playin The Niners, who has won two in a row, takes on seven rivals in today’s seventh at Golden Gate Fields. Frank Alvarado will ride the 3-year-old Northern Devil colt for owner Antone Metaxas and trainer Steve Specht in the $32,000 optional claimer at six furlongs. Second in his two previous starts at Golden Gate, Playin The Niners broke his maiden by four lengths at Santa Rosa on July 30, then won a starter allowance by a head on Sept. 7 at Bay Meadows.

One for the road: Honey Love has trained as if she has some talent and comes from a barn (Steve Klesaris) that has done very well with rookies this year and could be live at first asking in today’s sixth at Aqueduct. John Velazquez will ride the 2-year-old Prime Timber filly in the $41,000 maiden affair for New York-breds at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Positive Roll and Sonic Tiger in the second, Charmo in the third and Angel Baby, Bromos Lead Change and Court Seeker in the fourth.
