It’s Best Not to Quit on This Bruin Team

When Stanford widened its lead over UCLA to 24-3 with 8:26 left, I turned off the TV in disgust, went to my computer and wrote the following to the L.A. Times: “UCLA Falls Apart Again -- Why should we be surprised? This is UCLA football.”

Thirty minutes later, I get a call from my sports fan daughter: “Daddy, did you see the end of the game? We won.”

No, I didn’t. Because I lost faith, because I gave up on UCLA when they didn’t give up on themselves, I missed seeing the biggest comeback victory in UCLA history. That’s my punishment. We shouldn’t be surprised. This is UCLA football.

Had the Stanford band followed tradition, there would have been no room in the end zone for Brandon Breazell’s game-winning catch.
