‘Poppins’ to Broadway in ’06
“Mary Poppins,” the musical that won rave reviews from British critics when it opened in 2004 in London, is coming to Broadway.
The production, a joint venture between the Walt Disney Co. and British producer Cameron Mackintosh (“Cats,” “Les Miserables,” “Phantom of the Opera”), will open on Nov. 16, 2006, at the New Amsterdam Theatre.
To make room for the show, Disney’s “The Lion King” will move in June from the New Amsterdam, its home since 1997, to the nearby Minskoff Theatre.
Staged by Richard Eyre, the show’s creative team includes Matthew Bourne (co-direction and choreography), Julian Fellowes (book) and Bob Crowley (set, costumes).
“With its magic and chutzpah, it simply blows away the opposition from rival West End Musicals,” wrote the London Independent. “Let’s not mince words: The stage version of ‘Mary Poppins’ is heaps better than the movie,” said the London Telegraph.
The musical, based on the P.L. Travers books and the 1964 Disney film, features most of the film’s original songs, written by Oscar winners Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman.
The London production of “Mary Poppins,” which reportedly cost $14 million, will continue its run at the Prince Edward Theatre.
