Reserve O.C. Deputy Quits Post

The owner of a Newport Beach restaurant recently resigned as a reserve Orange County sheriff’s deputy after a coin laundry owner complained that he had illegally parked on his property, shouted an obscenity and then flashed his deputy badge.
Freddie Glusman owns the Ritz, one of Fashion Island’s signature restaurants. Glusman quit the reserve program as the Sheriff’s Department conducted an internal investigation into his behavior on July 4, law enforcement officials said.
Dozens of reserves -- many political allies of Sheriff Michael S. Carona -- were appointed to the force even though they lacked full training or background checks.
The reserves were removed from the state’s database of peace officers because their background checks were incomplete. The state has since agreed to reinstate the reservists if they attend a police academy.
