Former Councilwoman’s Boyfriend Pleads Guilty

The boyfriend of a former Burbank city councilwoman faces a maximum sentence of life in prison after pleading guilty to a charge related to his trading two handguns to a gang member in exchange for cocaine.

Scott Schaffer, 52, pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to using a handgun to further a drug-trafficking crime. He is scheduled to be sentenced in June.

The former councilwoman, Stacey Jo Murphy, a mother of three, has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of cocaine possession and misdemeanor child endangerment.

Police have accused some of the gang’s members of being involved in the slayings of Los Angeles Police Officer James Beyea in 1988 and Burbank Officer Matthew Pavelka in 2003.
