Works by contemporary photographers William Klein and Stephen Shore, as well as 19th century masters Gustave Le Gray and Charles Negre, were sold at prices ranging from $10,000 to $200,000 on the opening day of Paris Photo, an international photography fair now in its ninth year.

About 40,000 people are expected this year at the event, where 106 exhibitors have set up stands, including 22 from the U.S., 30 from France and 14 from Spain. Works by Chinese and Mexican photographers are represented for the first time.

“It is the biggest photo show in the world,” said Michael Smith, publisher of Pennsylvania-based Lodima Press. “It is the place to meet European and American collectors.”
