A new mayoral duty: head a parade

Share

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will serve as grand marshal of Sunday’s 74th Hollywood Christmas Parade. The parade has been an annual event since 1928 except for 1930 and 1942 to 1944, during World War II. Traditionally it features celebrities, marching bands, floats, equestrian units and a grand finale featuring Santa Claus.

Villaraigosa is the first elected official to be selected as the grand marshal. Previous grand marshals include Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney and Charlton Heston. This year’s event will feature cast members from the television shows “Lost,” “Numb3rs,” “CSI Miami,” “Malcolm in the Middle” and “West Wing.”
