USC-Fresno Was an Easy One to Predict

Share

For those back East who could not see the USC-Fresno State game late Saturday night, let me sum it up:

Coming into the game the Trojans were averaging about 50 points, and the Bulldogs were averaging about 42 points.

So, you might say it was an average game.

The question of what world-class athlete Reggie Bush reminded me of went through my mind while watching his Heisman Trophy-clinching performance against Fresno State.

Then the answer came to me ... Secretariat.

Assuming that USC defeats UCLA and plays Texas in the Rose Bowl, will their coaches have seen enough digital film to field a defense capable of preventing the Longhorns from scoring 72 points?

Finally, the Bruins have the Trojans right where they want them. USC coaches will be scouring tapes of UCLA’s first 10 games to study the Bruins’ run defense [“Trojan Screen Saviors”, Nov. 22]. Only they won’t find one.

Now we know why the Bruins haven’t tackled opposing rushers all year: They were setting a trap for those tech-savvy Trojan coaches. When UCLA actually tackles Reggie Bush and LenDale White at the line of scrimmage, the Trojans will be flummoxed.
