Be Careful in Labeling the Play of the Weak

The Trojan defense answered its skeptics loud and clear Saturday afternoon at Eugene. USC stopped not one but two Oregon quarterbacks.

Forty-five unanswered points should stop all the talk about the defense being the “weak link” on this year’s team.

Buried deep in your report of the USC-Oregon game, you finally mention that Oregon lost a late touchdown due to an illegal block call. As the official newspaper of Trojan football, in all your preening and fawning, you neglected to mention what the replays showed: It was a horrible call.

Since the days of Charles White, USC has shown it can always beat an opponent because they have seven more men on their side.

I knew before the start of the USC-Oregon game that only one team was going to be 3-0 when the game ended.

But what I didn’t know was that the Trojans needed a 13-0 reminder that it’s a 13-0 record that guarantees USC a third straight national title!
