Gov. Signs Bill to Gain Federal Hospital Funds

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Wednesday allowing California to get $18 billion in federal money over the next five years for public, University of California and some private hospitals that serve Medi-Cal patients and the uninsured.

SB 1100, by Sen. Don Perata (D-Oakland), stems from an agreement between the governor and Democratic leaders.

Under the law, California won’t shift 554,000 elderly, disabled and blind Medi-Cal recipients into health maintenance organizations this year, though it could mean the loss of a $90-million federal incentive.
